Port USB Media DVR question?

I SA 8300HD DVR and there is a USB port on the front. I wonder if you could connect an external device such as a flash drive and more photos or listen to the DVR. I do not want to copy movies from the DVR, but for file sharing, as a Media Center to my living room. I inserted a disc USB flash drive in the DVR, but nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible to do?
