They say they can not everybody, but for a primary school in Leicestershire has shown that small is all simply not true.
Last week, a local elementary school (less than 50 students in total) have taken a trip in the Peak District. The weather was good, big business and the children had a wonderful time. Top marks to everyone on the trip.
But what about people not on the trip, parents who have children to pick up tired when they return to school? Speaking as father, you get a very skewed view of a trip. You are not overly concerned this was like housing or food or the weather? The safety, supervision can relate more (it is good to get your child back usually), but the school will not be a happy single mother reserving your residential school near the Hilton Park Lane.
What matters to parents? Cost (of course), and the school of communication. What to pack and the package is not always high on the list, and the extraction and hours of collection. The key is to communicate clearly and often enough, and that does not stop when the trip begins.
On this trip, the school head (remember that this is a small school) to communicate directly with parents on the way home. First, the Chief sent a text message to any single parent when they began the journey home to let them know when they expected to find (which was exactly where he planned to return). Then, when the coach was stuck in road work (remember this is Britain's roads is spoken), sent another message to inform them of the changes in the arrival of new school. Communication was regular, clear and achievable.
Because each parent has received the message in time, they have managed to adjust their plans to pick up their children in the new time. The conditions of work were sorted, collecting other children from different schools, the organization of the lifts, even walking the dog. The result, when the coach came back, all parents were there at the right time, did not wait around, and children were welcomed with open arms.
The next day, the school of parents surveyed to ask what they think of communication and 100% (not 90% or 95%) of them loved it! The boss only had sent two text messages from the car. It took less than 2 minutes. There was no real cost of calls to mobile phones. No time to call the school office (which in a small school staff is not always), not the parents to leave messages on voice call round, and no one outside.
